As the new year rolls in, many of us are setting fresh goals and resolutions. For some, this might mean focusing on health, getting fit, or breaking a bad habit. But if you’re looking for a simple yet powerful challenge to kickstart 2024, why not consider Dry January?

Dry January is a month-long commitment to go alcohol-free. It’s not about deprivation; it’s about taking a break, resetting your relationship with alcohol, and seeing the benefits of a sober lifestyle for 31 days. And believe it or not, you might be surprised by how much your body, mind, and even your wallet will thank you! Whether you're trying it for the first time or making it a yearly tradition, here are some tips to gear up for Dry January and a little motivation to get you started.

Why Try Dry January?

Before we dive into the tips, let’s talk MOTIVATION baby! Why should you do it? Well, here's the stitch:

  1. Improved Health: Giving up alcohol for 31 days can have noticeable benefits, like better sleep, clearer skin, improved digestion, and more energy. You’ll likely find yourself feeling healthier both physically and mentally.

  2. Mental Clarity: Alcohol can cloud your mind, and a month without it often results in clearer thinking, better focus, and a more balanced mood. It’s a great opportunity to reset and rewire your brain to look at your alcohol consumption differently!

  3. Financial Savings: Let’s face it, drinking can get expensive. From bars to bottles, the cost of alcohol adds up. By going dry, you’ll save a good chunk of change that could go towards something you really want (like a weekend getaway or a new hobby). I barely pay a dime when I go out! Diet Cokes have free refills in most places ;)

  4. Boosted Confidence: Completing Dry January gives you a real sense of accomplishment. It can be a reminder that you’re capable of pushing through challenges and making intentional choices for your health. You will understand what you ACTUALLY like and do not like.

  5. Social Connections: You’ll likely discover that going out without drinking can actually be more fun than you imagined. With a clearer head, you can focus on conversations and activities without the need for a drink in hand. It took me not drinking to realize I was only scratching the surface of the connections in my life.

Tips to Gear Up for Dry January

1. Set a Clear Intention

The first step is to define why you want to do Dry January. Is it for your health? To save money? Or simply to see if you can do it? Having a clear reason will help you stay motivated throughout the month. Write down your reasons and keep them in mind whenever you feel tempted.

2. Prepare Your Social Circle

Let your friends and family know about your Dry January plans. Not only will this hold you accountable, but it will also help you avoid any awkward situations where you’re the only one not drinking. You’ll be surprised how many people will cheer you on — and some might even decide to join you! I found it helped to start a sober social media page where I was loud and proud about my sobriety. Grab a friend or family member and have them be your sober communication buddy.

3. Stock Up on Fun BEVERAGES

One of the challenges of Dry January is that many social occasions revolve around drinks. So, it’s helpful to have some alcohol-free alternatives on hand. Stock up on sparkling waters, mocktails, kombucha, and alcohol-free beers or wines. Having these options ready will make it easier to say no to the usual temptations. We want to feel included in the experiences we share with others so having a delicious fun mocktail could make it easier for you to get through the month and be successful in your Dry January.

4. Plan Your Social Events

If you know you’ll be attending a party or a gathering where alcohol will be flowing, plan ahead. Decide what your response will be if someone offers you a drink (you can say "I’m taking a break this month" or "I’m driving tonight"). If you anticipate feeling tempted, bring along a fun non-alcoholic drink of your own or offer to be the designated driver. Be confident in your response and do not let anyone make you feel like this is the wrong decision. Remember why you are doing it.

6. Track Your Progress

One of the most motivating aspects of Dry January is seeing the changes over time. Keep a journal or use an app to track how you’re feeling. Notice the improvements in your sleep, your energy levels, and your mood. It’s often the small wins that will keep you going.

7. Be Kind to Yourself

Remember, Dry January isn’t about being perfect. If you slip up one day, don’t give up on the whole month. Instead, acknowledge it, reflect on what led to it, and get back on track. The goal is progress, not perfection. Every day without a substance is a day to celebrate.

Motivation to Keep You Going

There’s no denying that the first few days (or even weeks) of Dry January can feel like a challenge. But the rewards are well worth it. Think about how amazing it will feel to close out the month feeling healthier, clearer, and more in control. Plus, you'll have gained valuable insight into your relationship with alcohol — something that can carry on beyond January.

Do it for your FUTURE SELF! When you make it through the month, you’ll likely feel a sense of pride in yourself that’s hard to beat. And who knows? You might find that you don’t miss alcohol as much as you thought you would — and that’s a powerful realization.

So, if you're on the fence, consider giving it a shot. Dry January is more than just a challenge; it’s an OPPORTUNITY to take back control, prioritize your health, and prove to yourself that you’re capable of more than you might have imagined Ready to take on Dry January? Let’s do this — here’s to a refreshing and empowered start to the new year!
