The 4th of July can be one of those holidays. You know, the grill is going, the fireworks, the coolers filled with every drink under the sun. It’s loud, it’s hot, and honestly, it used to be a holiday that revolved around alcohol more than anything else for me, and I know I am not alone.
So what happens when you’re sober now? Or maybe you’re not 100% sober, but you’re just not really drinking like you used to. Either way, it can be a tempting day of serious partying. But remember, we can party just as hard as we used to… just in a bit of a different way. The next morning of the Fourth used to be filled with many never-ending, crazy drunken stories about the night before, a headache, and hangover food. Now, I’m all about enjoying the party for however long I feel like it and waking up feeling amazing with a coffee to the sunrise. (Just kidding on the sunrise part, I am sleeping til noon if I so please)
If I can do it, so can you. We don’t need alcohol to enjoy the holiday… just a little bit of a game plan.
1. Bring Your Own Drinks
Don’t chance it. Unfortunately, not everyone provides non-alcoholic options or cool mocktails for a crowd. Pack your favorites. There are fantastic N/A canned mocktails, flavored sparkling waters, non-alc beers, all perfect for beach days, pool parties, and backyard BBQs. We love a good Tost beverage, Athletic Brewing Co beer, and Cycling Frog if you’re into THC/CBD drinks. 🍹Holding something cold in your hand is always a good feeling during gatherings. If you are at a bar or restaurant, scope out that drink menu in advance and always have your go-to order ready.
2. Focus on the Food (Honestly, it's the best part anyway)
Let's not pretend that 4th of July food isn't absolutely top tier summer faves. Burgers, corn on the cob, watermelon, pasta salad, oh my… I personally favor the spicy Italian sausage... 🤪 The best conversations are had around the snack table, anyway, right? And don’t even get me started on dessert. It’s a holiday… you deserve it (always).
3. Make an Exit Plan
If you feel like the vibe is shifting or temptation is creeping in, it’s totally okay to leave early. It’s honestly the same thing every year, so who cares? Bounce and go slam that dessert while lounging on your sofa.
4. Remember Why You're Doing This
You’ve already done the hard part: choosing what’s right for you. This one holiday doesn’t get to mess with your peace. You’ve got bigger fireworks in your life right now… have fun!
