Summer is coming to an end. Need a reset? Let’s try SOBER SEPTEMBER together!
You can always find an excuse to have an alcoholic beverage. You had a rough day at work, you are celebrating something, you just want to de-stress. We all just want a clear mind, free from the everyday dilemmas, right? What a good time to try Sober September! Cutting out alcohol was the best way to go in my personal experience. Can’t commit to cutting it out 100% overnight? Try cutting back this month and see how you feel.
Some of us never really get to the root of our emotions or mental health because we are so quick to react using a substance (specifically alcohol). Think of it like this, alcohol puts a cloud over your 100% self, so when you are celebrating something, the more and more you drink the darker and darker the cloud becomes. This pulls you further away from your 100% self.
We think of alcohol or any substance as an enhancement to ourselves and/or out lives, which can be true in moderation. However, since alcohol is so widely accepted, the line of overusing said substance becomes hazy. This is where I and many other people get into trouble. Self-reflection and re-evaluation become necessary for becoming your best self and ensuring the substance is not controlling YOU.
There are many ways to try and cut back or cut out alcohol. I found COMMUNITY is the biggest help. Finding others you can relate to who are on the same path or have similar mindsets regarding their alcohol consumption is truly the best! This month, we have a few fun and mindful events that you should check out. First, we have DRAG ME TO THE GYM 4.0, our fourth installment of our drag workout class at Evolve Fitness in the Elmwood Village. You will take a 1-hour circuit class (all fitness levels welcome) with 3 local chaotic drag queens motivating and making the workout actually fun! Then they will be put to WERK and give you a show. This is a great way to build community and give back to yourself, stay healthy, and have fun while doing it! Bring a friend and then go get lunch after!
Next, we have our September Sober Social at Rationales in Williamsville, New York. We have had such great turnouts of people at each of our monthly sober socials and many returning faces! You get one mocktail for RSVPing to the event which is completely free to attend. Rationales will be giving away a $50 gift card to one of our lucky guests! We are so excited to bring our community over to the northtowns! Rationales has a couple lovely patios to enjoy, inside seating, and plenty of options no matter what you like to drink! 🙂
Lastly, there is no better way to feel community than all laughing together. Laughter truly cures the soul! Make sure to join us at our Queer Comedy Showcase at Mr. Goodbar in Buffalo, New York! All WNY Queer comics, all hilarious. Diapers not included!
Remember you are not alone. Many people are going through the same or similar things as you. We just have to talk about it openly and honestly and other people will relate! I cannot wait to see you all at our events this month. Sober One Six is a production and event management company but behind it, we are real caring Buffalonians who want to live our best lives together! Reach out if you ever have any questions or want some advice! I (Andy AKA Mister Mocktail) am more than happy to help.
