When it comes to cutting back or quitting drinking, the emotional and mental benefits are the focus. But let’s talk about the material perks that come with this choice—because who doesn’t like saving a little extra cash and getting more out of life? I know I do!

1. You’ll Save A LOT of Money by Not Drinking

Let’s be real: drinking is expensive. Think about all the nightly happy hour specials, weekend bar tabs, and the occasional bottle of wine at home, the costs add up quickly. Let’s say you take all the money you spend on alcohol and put it elsewhere—whether it's saving for a vacation, treating yourself to a spa day, or investing in a new hobby. When I quit drinking, it truly felt like I received a raise! The amount of money spent monthly was evident and was very shocking.

2. Your Health Costs Will Drop

Alcohol can take a toll on your body, leading to more doctor visits, potential treatments, and medications. Cutting back or quitting can lead to fewer health issues, which means fewer bills down the line. For me, alcohol gave me anxiety and depression, which led to me not caring for myself physically. Taking out alcohol gave me the energy to go to the doctor, the dentist, etc, which allowed me to put my health first. Putting more time and effort into your health upfront can provide short-term and long-term relief that you are in good health, and you will have the energy to put into your health to limit issues.

3. Better Sleep, Better Productivity

When you drink less, you sleep better, and that’s a FACT! We all know that alcohol disrupts your sleep, so eliminating alcohol intake will ultimately give you better sleep, which will result in more energy. I will say, for me, I have to make sure to get at least 8-9 hours to feel at 100%. Even though alcohol is out of my life, it is important to make sure rest is prioritized, which sometimes can be difficult as we all lead busy lives. I am glad I do not have alcohol disrupting me so I can understand what causes me unrest and how much rest my body needs daily.

4. More Time for Things That Matter

What are you doing if you are spending your nights at the bar or grabbing a bottle of wine after work and going home to watch your favorite t.v. show? (which is what I was doing). I’ll tell you, you will be able to find new hobbies/skills and put effort into things you didn’t know you wanted or needed and now have the energy and capacity to do so. When I stopped drinking, it didn’t take me long to get a new car, a new apartment, and start what would be a long-term career!

To Conclude…

Cutting back or quitting drinking isn’t just about personal growth—it’s a win for your wallet, your health, and your time. The material benefits go far beyond what you might expect, and the results can be seen quickly. So, if you’re looking to live more intentionally and save a little extra along the way, going sober-curious might just be the best decision you make. Try it out and see where it leads!
